CMS Secures Medical Data and Facilitates Partner Compliance

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) needed to strengthen protection of sensitive patient data exchanged with hundreds of external partners and to meet evolving regulatory requirements such as FISMA and HIPAA. Concerned that its network-and-device–centric approach left data exposed — and that many partners lacked the expertise to implement advanced security — CMS selected PKWARE’s data discovery and encryption solution to provide persistent, data-level protection across all platforms.

PKWARE implemented an enterprise-wide encryption solution (AES256, PKI support, complex passwords and policy key management) and its application was deployed on desktops, laptops and mobile devices for more than 6,000 CMS employees and used for secure exchanges with 250+ partner organizations. PKWARE met all agency requirements, brought CMS data exchange into federal and industry compliance, and reduced transfer times by compressing files before encryption, becoming an essential, expanding component of CMS’s information collection and exchange processes.
