Darkrose Studios, an independent publishing company and digital content creation house, wanted to make its sci-fi/fantasy graphic novel more engaging for readers at conventions and beyond. PixelPlex was brought in to create an augmented reality mobile app for iOS and Android that would deepen audience immersion and extend the storytelling experience of the Treadwater graphic novel.

PixelPlex built Treadwater AR to overlay 3D characters and effects onto the printed pages of the comic, letting users trigger interactive scenarios by pointing their phone at AR-enabled pages and manipulating the device. The app also included how-to guidance, original videos, and in-app photo/video capture, delivered through a smooth, thumb-friendly UI. The result was a bridge between print and digital reading that increased engagement and loyalty; the project took 2400 man-hours.
