UAV monitoring to preserving endangered spider monkeys

Drone & GIS, an environmental monitoring organization in Ecuador, needed a faster, more accurate way to assess the health and viability of rainforest habitat for the endangered Brown-headed Spider Monkey. Working with Pix4D and its Pix4Dmapper software, the team used UAV imagery to map dense forest areas that were difficult to survey by traditional methods.

Pix4D helped Drone & GIS generate an accurate digital surface model and orthomosaic from 7,300 images covering about 1,200 hectares, enabling forest volume calculations and habitat analysis. The project was completed in just two days, produced a high-resolution orthomosaic at around 8 cm GSD, and delivered valuable topographic data for conservation planning while reducing time and cost compared with conventional surveying.
