Out of power: mapping a disused coal plant for new life

H&W Surveying and Consulting used Pix4D software to tackle a difficult redevelopment survey of a disused coal power plant in the UK. Their challenge was to capture accurate data across a sprawling 171-hectare site with very tall structures, including cooling towers and a 220-meter chimney, while also assessing an ash stockpile that would factor into future flood protection and site planning.

Using PIX4Dcapture and PIX4Dmatic, H&W Surveying and Consulting flew 16 drone missions, collected 4,004 images, and placed 80 Ground Control Points to create a detailed point cloud of the site. Pix4D helped cut processing time from over 32 hours to 14 hours, with Step 1 reduced from 9 hours 47 minutes to 2 hours 52 minutes, giving the client reliable, accurate data to support redevelopment decisions.
