Mesh-side story: saving a Brooklyn landmark digitally

Tushevs Aerials used Pix4Dmapper from Pix4D to document and preserve the Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn, a historic landmark slated for demolition. The challenge was to capture the building’s size, textures, and architectural detail before it disappeared, while also creating a high-quality 3D record of the site.

Pix4D helped Tushevs Aerials fly a DJI Phantom 3 Pro over the refinery, capture 218–220 images across two 15-minute flights, and process the data into a 3D textured mesh in about four hours. The result was a detailed digital model that accurately reflected the structure’s colors and surfaces, providing a lasting historical record and demonstrating how UAV-based mapping can deliver fast, cost-effective cultural heritage preservation.
