Landfill monitoring using verified elevation models

TerraPAC Imagery used Pix4D software to support landfill monitoring in Hawaii, where the team needed a reliable way to track elevation and volume changes over time. The challenge was to assess the accuracy of aerial reconstruction results against ground truth measurements gathered across multiple survey dates.

Using Pix4Dmapper, TerraPAC Imagery processed three aerial datasets with well-distributed ground control points and compared the resulting DSMs to RTK ground truth data. Pix4D’s results showed single-Gaussian error distributions with RMS values around three times the original GSD, with about 50% of points within 20 cm vertical accuracy and 90% within 40 cm; the workflow also enabled the team to identify landfill change and approximate volume differences between survey periods.
