Flying solo: a one-man 115km long aerial highway survey

Corvus Monitoring, a small drone mapping company led by Julien Lieb, was hired to help the Swiss Federal Roads Office (OFROU) resolve a long-running question about which authority was responsible for trees and roadside upkeep along a 115 km highway corridor. Using Pix4Dmapper and an eBee drone with a SODA camera, the team needed to map the highway accurately, align the results with existing GIS data, and work quickly before seasonal foliage obscured the fences.

Pix4D enabled Corvus Monitoring to deliver orthomosaics, a 2D shapefile, point clouds, and a flythrough video from the survey. The 115 km project was completed in just over two months, roughly twice as fast as a comparable ground survey, while also improving safety and providing richer outputs for planning and cost estimation. With Pix4D, Corvus Monitoring helped OFROU create precise fence and buffer-area data for collaboration with communes and forest management stakeholders.
