Assisting climbers with photogrammetry and 3D models

Climb Assist, a company that maps rock climbing routes, needed a better way to help climbers find and understand routes than relying on hand-drawn sketches and written guidebook descriptions. Working with Pix4D, they used aerial photogrammetry and Pix4Dcloud to create 3D models of climbing areas, including Boulder Canyon in Colorado, so climbers could visualize routes in a more intuitive way.

Pix4D’s solution let Climb Assist upload drone images from a DJI Phantom 4 Pro and process them into detailed 3D models in about 1.5 hours per dataset. The team mapped roughly 50 routes in Boulder Canyon using around 1,500 images total, making route-finding easier for climbers and reducing time spent searching for climbs. Climb Assist said Pix4Dcloud was straightforward and easy to use, helping them build a more accessible climbing resource and community.
