Analysis and documentation of a crash using drone mapping

Anne Arundel County Police needed a fast, accurate way to document a serious minibus crash in Maryland so investigators could preserve evidence before cleanup and road reopening. Using Pix4Dmapper from Pix4D, along with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone, they captured the scene and created overlapping images for reconstruction.

Pix4D’s solution produced a point cloud, 3D model, and orthomosaic that could be brought into CAD software for diagrams, measurements, and follow-up analysis. The drone-based workflow helped reconstruct the crash scene in hours and reduced road closure time to about 20 minutes, compared with an estimated 3 hours for a LiDAR-based approach, while providing court-ready evidence for the investigation.
