An immersive VR experience built with photogrammetry

Drone Orange, a Jeju Island–based creator of VR, AR, and interactive media, wanted to bring the island’s natural beauty and UNESCO heritage sites to more visitors. Its earlier 360-degree video flying simulator had limitations in quality, depth, and immersion, so the team turned to Pix4Dmapper from Pix4D to reconstruct real-world environments in 3D for a more realistic experience.

Using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone and Pix4Dmapper, Pix4D helped Drone Orange capture and process site imagery into 3D point clouds and models for a VR flying simulator, AR program, and 3D-printed miniatures. Images were captured in about two hours per site and processed in two days, with the full project delivered in seven months; Drone Orange said it would have taken much longer to create the meshes from scratch, and the finished experience now runs at Playbox VR in Jeju Island.
