Aerial mapping of coastal ecosystems for restoration

Project Seagrass, a UK charitable organization focused on restoring and protecting seagrass meadows, needed a better way to monitor fragile coastal ecosystems over time. Their challenge was to replace labor-intensive dives and slow, small-scale drone surveys with a faster, more efficient method for tracking plant health and restoration progress across large sites.

Using PIX4Dfields from Pix4D with a WingtraOne fixed-wing drone, Project Seagrass was able to capture 824 images over 2 hectares in a 25-minute flight and stitch them into orthomosaics for analysis and sharing. Pix4D’s software enabled rapid, offline processing of RGB and multispectral imagery, giving the team year-on-year comparison data, improved survey efficiency, and better insight into seagrass restoration progress.
