Accurate volume estimation with non-ideal flight plan

Servizi Aerofotogrammetrici di Prossimità Srls (SAPR), an Italian construction surveying company, needed to estimate the volume of sand and gravel stockpiles in a quarry with centimeter-grade accuracy. Using Pix4Dmapper, they had to overcome a non-ideal drone flight plan, missing image geotags, multiple manual flights, and difficult site conditions with obstacles and surfaces that were hard to match.

Pix4D supported SAPR by using ground control points, subproject merging, and manual tie points in Pix4Dmapper, along with rayCloud and mosaic editor cleanup to refine the DSM and orthomosaic. The result was a high-resolution model at under 3 cm GSD and a stockpile volume estimate within the customer’s target error range of around 10%, leading to strong client satisfaction and repeat survey opportunities for ongoing monitoring.
