A whirlwind mission: surveying a wind farm access road

Biodrone, a Norway-based drone surveying and mapping company, was hired to survey a wind park access road in Hundhammerfjellet, Nærøysund, Norway. The challenge was to document the completed road accurately in a complex environment with wind turbines, pylons, and strict flight constraints, using Pix4D’s photogrammetry workflow.

Using a DJI Phantom 4 RTK and Pix4Dmatic, Biodrone flew at permitted high altitude and between the pylons to capture 1,245 images over 2.6 km², achieving a 3.87 cm/px GSD. Pix4D processed the dataset in just 2 hours, delivering an orthomosaic and point cloud that helped Biodrone complete the survey faster than before and with the required accuracy.
