Red Clay – Simplified Design

Red Clay is a San Francisco–based technology platform that helps retailers and designers collaborate to create physical product designs faster. Facing the imminent arrival of a large enterprise customer, Red Clay needed a scalable, self-service web platform and a migration from a PHP stack to Ruby on Rails—but had only one front-end–focused CTO and a tight timeline and budget, and lacked experience hiring RoR developers.

Pivotal rebuilt the web app from the ground up using Ruby on Rails with a JavaScript backbone, introduced agile practices, and helped recruit two in-house RoR developers. The new platform supports full project workflows (briefs, designer selection, one-click designer applications and automated notifications), met the deadline, established internal development capability, and provided a scalable foundation for future features and mobile apps.
