Opera scales to 2 TB of ad data with TiDB

Opera, a global web innovator with a popular ads platform, faced significant data management challenges due to explosive data growth. Their initial MySQL database could not handle the high-frequency reads and writes or the real-time calculations required for audience analysis and ad targeting, with overall data volume reaching 10 TB. This prompted them to seek a new solution, leading them to the vendor PingCAP and their distributed SQL database, TiDB.

PingCAP's TiDB provided a horizontally scalable, MySQL-compatible solution that eliminated the need for complex sharding. The implementation, which included integration with bitmap technology for real-time calculations, was completed in about a week. The results were stable performance despite growing data volumes, with the ability to perform full scans on billion-row tables efficiently. This allowed Opera Ads to instantly show the estimated number of audiences for ad campaigns and made their advertising platform more real-time and accurate.
