Choosing the Right Database for Your Applications

Shopee, a leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, faced significant challenges in scaling its back-end database systems to support its rapid business growth. Their existing MySQL infrastructure struggled with large data volumes and high query loads, making it difficult to maintain performance and avoid complex sharding operations. This led them to seek a new database solution, ultimately partnering with the vendor PingCAP.

PingCAP's solution was the implementation of their TiDB database, an open-source, MySQL-compatible distributed SQL database. This allowed Shopee to achieve horizontal scalability without the need for painful application sharding, simplifying operations. The measurable impact was substantial; by the end of 2019, Shopee had deployed over 20 TiDB clusters comprising 400+ nodes to manage over 200 TB of data. TiDB became a critical piece of infrastructure, successfully handling scenarios like log storage, data aggregation, and serving as a primary database for applications like their chat system, enabling greater flexibility and performance.
