The DrugBase: 21 pharmaceutical and medical databases in one product
Deutscher Apotheker Verlag (DAV), Germany’s largest pharmaceutical publisher, commissioned Basilicom to build DrugBase — a unified digital information product for pharmacies, doctors’ practices, hospitals and other medical institutions. The goal was to combine 21 distinct pharmaceutical and medical databases (some maintained by DAV, others licensed) into one searchable platform despite highly heterogeneous data models, differing update cycles and a variety of usage and licensing scenarios.
Built on Pimcore’s master data management platform, DrugBase uses Elasticsearch and a modern responsive UI to offer either targeted per‑database searches or an intelligent global search with autosuggestions, database‑specific filters and faceting. The solution delivers much faster, contextual search results, is future‑proof for new integrations and devices, and currently handles 5.6 million data objects and around 600,000 pharmaceutical products — significantly reducing search time for users.
