Officina Meccanica Sestese SpA speeds wood runner handling with Piab in a 4–7 second strapping cycle

Officina Meccanica Sestese SpA, a designer and manufacturer of end-of-line packaging systems, required a flexible and efficient solution for handling porous raw wood runners used in a vertical strapping machine for a furniture component manufacturer. Their previous suction cups from other suppliers failed to guarantee a perfect pick-up of the porous material and required frequent replacement for different formats. Piab provided its Kenos KVG vacuum grippers to address this challenge.

Piab's solution utilized Kenos KVG120 grippers to handle a full layer of wood runners and KVG60 grippers with integrated COAX vacuum generators to pick up individual runners. This implementation provided Officina Meccanica Sestese with a highly reliable and flexible system that solved the pick-up problem and eliminated the need for frequent line retooling. Piab's technology also offered a longer service life than previous suction cups and, thanks to the energy-efficient COAX vacuum generators, contributed to a reduction in compressed air consumption and total manufacturing costs.
