Case Study: Meccanotecnica Umbra achieves precise end-of-line automation with Piab's Kenos® KCS gripper

A Piab Case Study

Preview of the Meccanotecnica Umbra SpA Case Study

Meccanotecnica Umbra SpA fills 12 thermoformed moulds in 15-20 minutes with Piab

The customer, Meccanotecnica Umbra SpA, required absolute precision in handling thermoformed moulds and trays for automotive seals, working with a zero-error margin. Their challenge was to find a reliable gripping solution for two different surfaces that would prevent material deformation. The system integrator Umbra Control selected a customized Kenos® KCS gripper from vendor Piab to automate this end-of-line pick and place process.

Piab provided a customized solution featuring a four-suction cup version of their Kenos® KCS gripper, powered by a COAX® vacuum generator. This design allowed the cobot to lift the thermoforms from their outermost points, completely eliminating bending. The process, which was previously manual, was successfully automated with a cycle time of approximately 100 seconds per mould. The vendor Piab delivered an economically competitive solution that ensured the required precision and reliability for the customer's operations.
