A U.S. Fortune 500 department store sought to boost store productivity and employee performance across its nationwide footprint. Many associate tasks—stocking, restocking and order fulfillment—depend on store-specific, frequently changing item locations, and a large seasonal workforce often lacked the familiarity needed to perform these location-specific tasks efficiently.
The retailer integrated Phunware’s real-time “blue dot” indoor wayfinding into its associate app on Bluebird handhelds, letting associates scan an item and receive turn-by-turn routing to the exact aisle or shelf. Early tests showed seasonal workers using the feature completed restocking tasks 8% faster than long-term employees; the solution is live in four stores with a planned rollout to more than 1,100 stores by the end of 2018.
