New College Durham makes exemplary use of VMware View – reducing the costs of their desktop environment

New College Durham worked with Phoenix Software to address the rising cost, aging desktop estate, and performance demands of supporting thousands of students and staff with reliable access to essential applications. The college wanted to extend desktop lifespan, reduce power use and carbon footprint, and improve access to Microsoft Office and other core tools through desktop virtualization using VMware View.

Phoenix Software helped New College Durham assess and prepare its environment, then design and deploy a VMware View VDI solution built on FusionIO storage and WYSE P20 PCoIP terminals. The rollout delivered much faster logins, improved application performance and graphics rendering, simpler centralized desktop management, lower power usage, and a more efficient IT operation, with the solution supporting around 800,000 IOPS across four vSphere hosts and enabling plans to replace the remaining 800 desktops.
