Umbrella is a membership-based service that empowers older adults to live independently by building a nationwide volunteer network to deliver groceries, medication, and other essentials. Faced with the COVID-19-driven need to scale from a local New York operation to a national platform while safely vetting thousands of volunteers, Umbrella partnered with Persona and used automated identity verification (Persona’s Accounts) to address its trust-and-safety challenge.

Persona implemented automated identity checks in Umbrella’s onboarding flow and a simple re‑verification path so volunteers returning after a break can regain access in one or two steps. The result: Umbrella moved from a slow, manual vetting process to a rigorous, scalable system in a matter of days, rapidly scaling its nationwide volunteer network with minimal developer resources while maintaining safety for seniors.
