AWS IoT Enabled Smart Wildlife Drinking Water Station

Persistent Systems helped Sri Lanka’s Department of Wildlife address a critical challenge in Kumana National Park, where drought conditions threatened wildlife water supplies. To reduce animal mortality during dry periods, the department previously had to send staff deep into the forest to inspect pond levels and arrange costly tanker deliveries.

Persistent Systems designed and deployed a cellular-connected, solar-powered groundwater pump system managed remotely through an AWS IoT-based application. The solution used AWS IoT Core, Kinesis, S3, DynamoDB, SES, and Elastic Beanstalk/CloudWatch to monitor water levels, store data, send notifications, and maintain high availability. As a result, the park improved wildlife access to drinking water, reduced tanker and energy costs, and eliminated the need for staff to make frequent onsite water checks.
