A Perle Case Study
The University of Victoria faced the challenge of gathering real-time data from numerous serial-based oceanographic instruments on the seabed for its VENUS underwater observatory. These instruments used RS232, RS422, and RS485 interfaces and were not designed to communicate over an Ethernet network. The university needed a reliable, compact solution to translate this serial data for transmission via fiber-optic cable.
Perle implemented its IOLAN Device Servers, which provided the necessary serial-to-Ethernet connectivity in a small form factor. This solution from Perle enabled the remote, real-time collection of data and allowed researchers to configure instruments from anywhere with a web link. The result was a transformative shift from retrieving archived data to having real-time interactivity, greatly extending instrument deployment times and enhancing research capabilities.
