A Perle Case Study
Subsea 7, a leading subsea engineering contractor, required a highly precise differential GPS positioning service for offshore oil and gas operations, as standard GPS signals were not accurate enough. To build this service, they needed to connect serial GPS receivers at remote reference stations to their central network. They turned to vendor Perle for a serial to IP solution to address this challenge.
Perle implemented its IOLAN serial terminal servers to connect the GPS receivers to local Ethernet networks, enabling the real-time transmission of raw data over IP to a control center. This solution provided the robust and reliable data transfer essential for the hostile environments in which Subsea 7 operates. The implementation was a success, with Subsea 7 purchasing over 150 Perle IOLANs for use in 75 global stations. The resulting Veripos service provides the oil and gas industry with one of the world's most accurate GPS augmentation systems, with accuracy down to 20 centimeters.
