DFKI turns 2TB of crop data into VR environments with Perle routers

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) faced the challenge of creating a mobile, battery-powered robot to gather vast amounts of agricultural data for virtual reality environments. Their challenge was to find networking equipment robust enough for field use while consuming minimal power to preserve battery life. They turned to Perle for its industrial routers and Ethernet switches.

Perle provided ultra-low-power IRG routers and an IDS Ethernet switch. The routers consumed half the power of competitors, enabling reliable cellular and 5G data transmission for the solar and wind-powered system. This solution allowed DFKI’s Valdemar robot to autonomously collect and transmit 2TB of data per campaign, which was then processed into immersive VR environments for plant analysis, advancing the future of automated, smart farming.
