Apache Corporation, a top independent oil and gas company, needed a way to integrate serial data from critical oil export pumps on its Forties oil field platforms into its Ethernet-based SCADA network for monitoring and control. The challenge was to create a reliable Modbus communications gateway between the RS485 serial network on the Variable Speed Drives and the modern SCADA system. Perle was engaged with its IOLAN Terminal Server to address this need.

Perle implemented its IOLAN SDS4 Terminal Servers, which feature a built-in Modbus gateway. This solution seamlessly acted as a Modbus RTU to Modbus Ethernet gateway, presenting the serial pump data across the network to the SCADA system. As a result, personnel onshore and offshore gained the ability to monitor and control oil production flow in real-time according to demand, supporting Apache's goal of fully exploiting the field's potential.
