Crisis Text Line, a non-profit offering a free 24/7 confidential text service for people in crisis, ran CrisisTrends.org to share anonymized aggregate data but faced slow, hard-to-navigate public visualizations and a monthly manual CSV upload process because their database couldn't connect to Tableau. After onboarding Periscope Data in 2017 for internal metrics, the data team sought a better public-facing solution to remove the bottleneck and make their crisis trends data more accessible.

Crisis Text Line embedded a Periscope Data dashboard that runs directly off their database (leveraging R and Python integrations and Periscope’s privacy features), replacing manual uploads with real-time charts and more flexible, filterable visualizations. The Periscope Data implementation made CrisisTrends.org more dynamic, increased internal data dissemination and self-service insight creation, supported tens of thousands of monthly visitors with up-to-date displays, and helped amplify Crisis Text Line’s data-driven mission and recruiting.
