The Co-op, Australia’s largest member-owned retailer and leading provider of educational and professional resources, wanted to grow market share for book products and broaden its offering to staff and students (including electronics, mobile services and fashion). The retailer also needed to reach new non-members—professionals such as lawyers, doctors and accountants—and reengage existing members who didn’t know the Co-op had evolved beyond an on-campus textbook store. Site navigation restrictions and a large database of inactive members further complicated cost‑efficient customer acquisition.

Performics targeted and reactivated inactive members and implemented remarketing, shopping ads and cost‑saving creative that addressed four keyword levels (generic, category, author and product title), supported by improved data feeds and site changes. In the first five months the product strategy drove a 383% revenue increase, paid search share jumped from 0.5% to 8% (15×), and online sales grew about 40% month‑over‑month.
