Overcoming the Challenges of Reusing Legacy Code in the Defense and Aerospace Sector

Raytheon Network Centric Systems, part of Raytheon, faced major challenges reusing legacy defense software after acquiring multiple businesses and losing access to the original developers. The team needed a way to quickly understand mature, complex code, document software architecture, and run “what if” analyses in its proprietary operating environment. Perforce’s Klocwork static analysis tools were used to support this effort.

Perforce’s Klocwork solution automatically produced graphical views of software architecture from source code, helping Raytheon’s developers understand interfaces, relationships, and logic flow much faster. The implementation was completed in about a week, analysis of 70,000 lines of code took under an hour instead of a week, and one project that would have taken six weeks was finished in two. Raytheon reported dramatically improved productivity, faster onboarding, stronger end products, and quicker delivery to customers.
