Large-scale Deployment of Static Analysis Leads to Measurable Productivity and Quality Improvements

Motorola’s iDEN mobile devices team faced growing code complexity, multiple external code integrations, tight time-to-market pressure, and the need to reduce external software failures. The company turned to Perforce’s Klocwork static analysis solution to help developers find defects earlier and improve software quality across its global development teams.

Perforce implemented Klocwork on-site with training and process support, then expanded it to remote sites in Asia, Australia, and Israel and across all iDEN products. The results were measurable: a 2x improvement in customer-reported defects at alpha-beta, a 3x improvement in customer-reported unique defects, a 1.2x reduction in non-traditional software cost of poor quality, and a 2x reduction in defects found at system test in the first year. Motorola also earned its 2005 CEO Quality Award for these improvements.
