How College Students Built a AAA Quality Game with Free Tools

Project Vesperi, a branching narrative sci-fi game created by two Chapman University students, Brandon Hill and Trevor Gore, needed a way to build a AAA-quality experience on a student timeline and budget. To keep costs low while managing large game assets and collaborating effectively, they chose Perforce P4 (formerly Helix Core) as their version control solution.

Perforce P4 helped Project Vesperi integrate smoothly with Unreal Engine, making it easier to work with large animation files, 4K textures, and Nanite asset packs inside UE5. As the team grew and became more distributed, Perforce supported streamlined collaboration and gave them a strong development foundation, helping them deliver a polished indie game with AAA ambition using free tools.
