A Percona Case Study
Estante Virtual is Brazil’s leading second‑hand book marketplace, with more than 7 million titles and nearly a million registered readers. Rapid growth pushed traffic beyond the capacity of the site’s MySQL/MyISAM database and web servers, causing slow searches, locking and index-corruption issues, while users demanded richer, faster search and vendor features.
Percona re-architected the stack—migrating full‑text search to Sphinx, converting data to InnoDB, adding C-based UDFs for cleaning and deduplication, and applying full‑stack optimizations (lighttpd for static content, dedicated image delivery, and HA replication techniques). The result: sub-0.1s search responses, near real‑time vendor indexes, improved stability and security, lower hardware and maintenance costs, and a highly scalable platform with a much better user experience.
