A Peplink Case Study
The Town of Tonawanda needed a dependable, secure VPN to support a new VoIP rollout and initially considered costly MPLS (a quoted 3 Mbps link would have been $96,000/year). After researching alternatives they found Peplink and, with partner West Networks, evaluated Peplink Balance routers and SpeedFusion bonding as an MPLS alternative — a design that promised equivalent reliability at a fraction of the cost (about a 92% savings).
Peplink (deployed by West Networks) implemented a proof-of-concept and then a full rollout of Balance appliances across nine sites (including a Balance 1350 at HQ), using SpeedFusion to bond a 35 Mbps FiOS link with proprietary PTP wireless backup and 256‑bit encrypted site‑to‑site VPN to a central gateway. The result: simplified administration (single web filter at HQ), QoS and WAN prioritization, sustained uptime (devices ran 114+ days with zero issues), 2.3 TB passed in 17 days with latency under 5 ms, and the large cost savings versus MPLS.
