Connecting a Drillship to Her Headquarter Using LTE

Pacific Drilling, an offshore ultra‑deepwater drilling company (NYSE: PACD), needed a reliable LTE solution to keep a drillship continuously connected to headquarters while supporting very high cellular usage (roughly 1 TB/month). To meet the vessel’s operational and communications demands, the vendor Peplink (deployed via integrator TECHfirm Canarias) was selected, using Peplink hardware and services to maximize ship‑to‑shore connectivity.

TECHfirm Canarias implemented a Peplink solution with MAX HD4 and MAX BR1 IP67 units onboard, a FusionHub virtual appliance in the customer datacenter, and Multi‑IMSI SIMs for broad carrier coverage. Peplink’s FusionHub acted as a SpeedFusion endpoint enabling bandwidth bonding, which delivered significantly improved throughput, reliability and latency management—matching datacenter performance, improving operational continuity for the drillship, and supporting the ~1 TB/month data load.
