Virginia Commonwealth University 100% Student Participation in Transformative Experiential Learning

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) identified significant gaps in student participation in experiential learning, with uneven access across different demographic groups and academic disciplines. The main challenges were a lack of information for students, a disconnect between curriculum and co-curricular activities, and barriers to access. To address this, VCU partnered with the vendor PeopleGrove (formerly Student Opportunity Center) to help achieve their goal of 100% student participation.

PeopleGrove provided the technological platform and strategic guidance to map, track, and scale VCU's experiential learning initiative. The solution included a system to categorize opportunities and track participation data. This resulted in VCU recording over 91,456 participation data points and 22,908 opportunities from 2019-2023, successfully achieving their goal of 100% student participation in transformative learning experiences before graduation.
