CERN Turns to Pentaho to Optimize Operations

CERN’s Advanced Information Services group needed to replace a mix of commercial and home-grown systems that supported more than 650,000 report executions a year and provide a single, secure 360-degree view of operational data for over 15,000 users. The organization also had complex data protection and access-control requirements across its varied workforce and needed systems that would not disrupt mission-critical operations. Pentaho Data Integration and Pentaho Business Analytics were selected to help address this challenge.

Pentaho implemented a unified analytics and data warehouse platform for CERN, automating ETL processes, decoupling data from proprietary systems, and embedding reporting through web service APIs. CERN’s team also extended Pentaho’s Mondrian engine to enforce rule-based access rights across applications. The result was a faster, easier-to-use BI environment, improved security, and a production platform that is replacing most legacy systems, with positive user feedback and a path toward a common corporate data warehouse.
