Preview of the YZD Case Study

YZD builds a 370-acre, $30 billion brand identity with Pentagram

The customer, YZD, a major urban redevelopment project in Toronto, faced the challenge of branding a 30-year, multi-generational transformation. They needed an identity that felt both monumental in its ambition and intimately connected to the future communities it would serve. The vendor, Pentagram, was engaged to develop a brand identity strategy to address this complex challenge.

Pentagram created a comprehensive brand identity system with the strategic positioning "Humanizing a Place of Monumental Ambitions." The solution leveraged the site's aviation heritage, using the YZD airport call sign as a unifying master brand and incorporating runway geometry into a flexible visual language. This system was designed to work across all scales, from large environmental graphics to intimate signage, providing the tools for clear communication across dozens of stakeholders. The identity established YZD as a resilient and consistent destination brand, building cumulative awareness for a development unfolding over three decades.
