A Pentagram Case Study
Studio Theatre, an influential non-profit theater company in Washington, DC, sought a revitalized visual identity to coincide with a major architectural renovation of its four-theater complex. The goal was to create a more open and welcoming space that captured its 'made-in-DC' culture and expressed its ambitions for engaging, socially relevant performances. Pentagram was enlisted to develop a new brand identity and environmental graphics program.
Pentagram created a type-driven identity that hints at the building's industrial past, utilizing a custom font and a striking yellow, black, and white palette. The solution included a dramatic facade with 6-foot-tall illuminated letters, new signage, interior environmental graphics, and large-scale archival murals. This revitalized branding announced the theater as a vibrant neighborhood personality, achieving the goal of a more welcoming community space. The work successfully integrated the identity with the new architecture, making Studio Theatre a more visible and distinctive force in the local arts scene.
