Penguin Press profiles almost 50 creators with Pentagram

Penguin Press sought to publish a book that would immerse readers in the raw, often unseen process of making art. The challenge for their vendor, Pentagram, was to design a layout that could seamlessly weave together extensive interview text with a vast array of visual ephemera like sketches and journal entries, maintaining a strong and clear connection between the copy and its corresponding images.

Pentagram created a design that treated each chapter like an academic journal, arranging the chaotic creative materials as treasured artifacts. The solution utilized arrows and footnotes to tightly link text and images, resulting in a visually rich and engaging experience. The work was critically acclaimed, cited in The New York Times Book Review for its excellent layouts that turn project ephemera into legible timelines, and described by reviewers as both a "visual feast" and a "piece of art" itself.
