A Pentagram Case Study
Nike, the global athletic brand, partnered with the design firm Pentagram to create a data-driven visual language for its Breaking4 campaign. The challenge was to develop compelling assets that could illustrate the complex science and storytelling behind runner Faith Kipyegon's attempt to break the four-minute mile, making factors like aerodynamics and performance innovation understandable and inspirational for audiences.
Pentagram designed a poetic visual narrative centered on a moving spiral to represent the mile, alongside detailed animations of Nike's custom gear like the aeronode speed suit and 3D-printed bra. These assets were used to support Nike's campaign storytelling ahead of the June 2025 attempt. While the sub-four-minute barrier was not broken, Kipyegon ran the fastest women's mile ever at 4:06.42, and Pentagram's work helped highlight the historic effort and the technological advancements supporting it.
