Walgett Shire Council raises weir by 1m with Pensar

Walgett Shire Council faced a critical water supply issue that required raising the existing weir level. The project, undertaken with vendor Pensar, also aimed to incorporate a fishway for river continuity and was challenged by an unpredictable high-risk flood environment, difficult geotechnical conditions, and severe limitations on local labor and material sourcing due to distance, COVID-19, and harvest season.

Pensar successfully raised the weir by one meter and constructed a new vertical slot fishway and high-flow rock ramp. Despite a one-in-fifty-year flood and other significant obstacles, Pensar delivered the project with minimal delays through strong client collaboration, community engagement, and the use of 3D scanning technology for precise fabrication. The solution ensures a reliable water supply for drought times and promotes fish sustainability for local communities.
