Urban Utilities completes 250m gravity sewer upgrade with Pensar

Urban Utilities engaged Pensar to address the challenge of removing the overflow risk from an existing pump station system. The project required constructing a new gravity main while the existing system had to remain fully live throughout the works, posing a significant operational challenge. Additional complexities included protecting an adjacent creek from discharge, working within a constrained site with deep excavations, and managing traffic along a major road.

Pensar implemented the solution by installing 250 meters of new gravity sewer and using tunnel boring to save native trees, including a large fig. A large temporary caisson was constructed to enable the safe installation of a new maintenance hole. Pensar successfully completed the project ahead of schedule and on budget with no lost time injuries, all while maintaining bi-directional traffic flow and keeping the system live.
