A Pearson English Case Study
Deutsche Post DHL, a global mail and logistics provider with about 450,000 employees in 220 countries, faced a major communications challenge: after mandating English as its corporate language, a 2009 needs analysis found average English skill levels far below the company’s target (average 4 versus a desired 7–8) and only 9% of staff meeting the “effective communication” requirement. With on-site classroom training impractical at scale, DP DHL needed a technology-based, easily deployable solution to raise Business English proficiency across diverse locations and roles.
DP DHL implemented Pearson English Business Solutions’ cloud-based One platform and the One LinGo app, using placement tests, personalized learning paths, performance-support tools and manager reporting to drive adoption. The program delivered a 65% cost saving versus classroom training and generated an estimated £2.06 million in annual productivity gains in 2012; engagement and outcomes were strong (82% of subscribers active weekly, average 17 hours of learning, satisfaction up from 65% to 91%), with measured improvements such as 70–75% better understanding/writing of business emails and documents.
