Shetland Islands Council enables secure ferry payments for 3,000 travellers with PDMS

Shetland Islands Council faced significant challenges processing payments for its vital inter-island ferry service due to unreliable network connections in remote areas and during sea crossings. PDMS partnered with STS to address this by integrating its ferry reservation and ticketing system with the G8 payments application, creating a solution to ensure robust, fast, and secure transaction processing despite the constraints.

The solution deployed by PDMS enabled offline card payments on board the vessels using rugged Android ticketing machines and Ingenico iSMP readers. This provided continuous payment capabilities through features like offline PIN verification and deferred authorisation. The result was a dramatically improved customer experience, with travellers now enjoying a reliable and secure way to purchase tickets and make onboard purchases regardless of internet connectivity, which significantly boosted customer satisfaction.
