A PBWorks Case Study
PBworks worked with Baltimore County Public Schools to roll out a district-wide wiki program for 103,643 students and 8,850 teachers to address a lack of collaborative, 21st-century tools, limited authentic publishing opportunities, student safety concerns, and the fact that students did not have email accounts. Prior methods—sharing Word files on local servers or floppy disks—were inefficient and provided few models of strong student writing or opportunities for peer review and revision.
BCPS adopted PBworks wikis (including a cloned “Teaching Thoughtful Learners” site and training wikis) to host student work, scaffold research projects, and deliver 24/7 professional development. The platform enabled multiple student models, peer editing, secure student participation without email, differentiated access for parents and classrooms, and active teacher engagement—resulting in richer student writing, broader collaboration, and higher-quality, anytime professional learning.
