Increasing Bank Fill Rates and Reducing Agency Spend at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust needed a better way to fill temporary shifts and reduce the heavy admin burden on its staffing team. Before working with Patchwork Health, the Trust relied on cold calling, mass emails, paper timesheets, and manual processes, which meant vacancies were often filled last minute, at escalated rates, or via agency.

Patchwork Health implemented its tech-enabled staff bank service, starting in West Middlesex University Hospital’s Emergency Department before rolling it out across the Trust. The result was a 96% average staff bank fill rate, up from 35%, 43,000 shifts filled by internal bank staff, 380,000 hours worked, and a 62% reduction in agency spend in the first six months, saving £1.2 million annually Trust-wide. Patchwork Health also helped improve lead times, with 85% of ED shifts booked four weeks in advance, while digitising communications and payments to cut admin work.
