Establishing a New Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) Transfer Bank to Combat Covid-19 With Imperial College Health Partners

Imperial College Health Partners worked with Patchwork Health to support the North West London Critical Care Network as COVID-19 admissions surged and critical care beds were running out across multiple hospitals. The challenge was to rapidly coordinate clinician availability, onboard new staff simply, and track hours and payments efficiently for a new ITU Transfer Project.

Patchwork Health implemented a bespoke staff bank solution in just four days, enabling shift booking in-app, digital timesheets, automated admin processes, and real-time broadcasting of vacant shifts. The result was faster patient transfers, improved safety and coordination, reduced admin burden, and an estimated net cost benefit of £30,000 per organisation, driven by lower reliance on agency staff and fewer transfer delays.
