Case Study: Black Girls Code amplifies visibility and community impact with Pastilla’s participatory rebrand

A Pastilla Case Study

Black Girls Code reaches 230 stakeholders and launches a bold new brand with Pastilla

Black Girls Code, an organization empowering Black and Brown girls in tech, faced the challenge of updating its brand to reflect its evolution beyond coding camps into a broader ecosystem. Their existing identity needed to better clarify their mission and increase visibility to resonate with students, parents, educators, and donors. They partnered with the vendor Pastilla, which provided brand strategy, design, and creative services for a comprehensive rebrand.

Pastilla developed a flexible and participatory design system inspired by quilting, a tradition in Black culture, allowing students to contribute their own artwork. The vibrant new identity was launched at AfroTech 2024 to an electric response. The rebrand has successfully increased engagement, strengthened community, and positioned Black Girls Code for growth, with early indicators showing a rise in partnerships and funding opportunities.
