Shifted Energy is Driving the Energy Economy to 100% Renewable

Shifted Energy is a cleantech company retrofitting existing water heaters into grid-integrated energy storage to help utilities balance the grid and increase renewable penetration while bringing renters and other hard‑to‑reach communities into energy programs. Facing the twin challenges of limited storage capacity and difficulty engaging renters, Shifted Energy partnered with Particle and used Particle’s IoT platform—notably the LTE E Series module with global SIM, Device Cloud, and OTA firmware updates—to connect and manage retrofit devices over cellular networks.

Using Particle’s hardware, software, and network, Shifted Energy deployed its Power Controller GIWH solution connected via the Particle LTE E Series. The implementation enabled 30‑minute installs, secure fleet management, and rapid OTA updates; demonstrated frequency response in fractions of a second and relay actuation within 12 cycles; and delivered measurable benefits including roughly 50% lower cost than batteries, an estimated >40% ROI, and a successful pilot at Manoa Gardens backed by Hawaiian Electric and Hawaii Energy. Particle’s platform made large‑scale, low‑cost, cellular deployments and renter engagement possible.
